World Stage - Germany: Discover Electronic Deep Cuts, Indie Gems & Lost Pop Classics With DISCO Catalogs

This year’s Reeperbahn Festival runs from September 16-19 in Hamburg, Germany. Held annually, Reeperbahn famously features a mix of up-and-coming artist performances across at least 70 local venues, plus a huge mix of music industry players.

In celebration of the festival, DISCO’s independent curatorial team has assembled a genre-spanning (and at times quite danceable) playlist spotlighting Germany’s music history.

Titled “World Stage - Germany,” our playlist features a collection of standout tracks ranging from electronic deep cuts to indie gems and lost pop classics, and all are currently available for sync placement.

HBz – “King Kong”

HBz are a German electronic duo comprising Nils Schedler and Niklas Brüsewitz. Friends since kindergarten, Schedler and Brüsewitz have been working together since the late 2000s and frequently collaborate with a wide range of other artists. Their thudding, club-ready entry "King Kong" dropped in 2021.

BUNT – “Clouds” (Sped Up)

BUNT. is the moniker of German electronic DJ and producer Levi Wijk. The rapidfire entry "Clouds" originally came out in 2023 as a collab with Florida rapper Nate Traveller.

Grossstadtgeflüster – “Komm zu Mama”

Electropop act Grossstadtgeflüster (translates to Big City Whispers) have been at it since 2003. The breathy and pop-forward "Komme Zu Mama" first showed up on the band's 2008 album, Bis einer heult!!! (Or, Until Someone Cries).

Deepchild - “Greifswalder Strasse”

Deepchild is the moniker of Rick Bull, a Berlin-born, Sydney-based experimental DJ specializing in techno and boundary-pushing futurist soundscapes. His 2006 cut "Greifswalder Strasse" (taken from his fourth album, Lifetimes) is a mind bending blend of playful video game accents, chopped and spliced R&B samples, and laid-back hip-hop beats.

Paula Hartmann and Levin Liam – “Crossfades”

Seamlessly blending German pop and rap, "Crossfades" is the collaboration between German musicians Paula Hartmann and Levin Liam. The 2024 single also appears on Hartmann's album kleine Feuer.

Bosse – “Salzwasser” (Feat. Alligatoah)

The grooving "Salzwasser" is a 2023 collab between German rock singer Axel Bosse and German rapper Alligatoah. You can also hear it on Bosse's album Übers Träumen.

Meredi – “salty water”

Meredi is the alias of German-Armenian neo-classical composer and pianist Ina Meredi Arakelian. Her slow-building, synth-laced ballad "salty water" is giving major Björk vibes.

Provinz – “Zorn und Liebe” (Feat. Nina Chuba)

German indie act Provinz teams up here with German singer/actress Nina Chuba for a powerful, reverb-packed pop gem. "Zorn & Liebe" first dropped in early 2022 an appears on Provinz's album of the same name.

Betterov & FATONI – “Der Teufel steckt im Detail”

Translated to “The Devil Is In The Details,” “Der Teufel steckt im Detail” is an ominous-sounding pop-rap collaboration between German rapper/actor FATONI and German indie rock performer Manuel Bittorf that came out in 2022.

Betterov – “Das Tor geht auf”

Here’s another entry by Betterov: “Das Tor geht auf” (or, “The Gate Is Opening”) sounds quite reminiscent of downtown indie-rock icons Interpol, with a slow-looping guitar riff and Betterov’s own distant vocal call.

Trio – “Da Da Da ich lieb dich nicht du liebst mich nicht aha aha aha”

Now here's a song with a story. German new wave act Trio first released the sprechgesang classic "Da Da Da" in 1981, and it literally sold millions of copies across the world. In the 90s, "Da Da Da" shot back to popularity after being featured in a 1997 Jetta ad. Score one for music supervision!

Willy Fritsch & Lilian Harvey – “Eine Liebelei, So Nebenbei”

Silver screen oldie "Eine Liebelei, so nebenbei" hails from the end of Germany's Weimar era (the early 1930s). It was performed by romantic leads Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch in the 1930 German musical-comedy Einbrecher (released internationally as Burglars).
