Kiki Annette - “Saint”
Kiki Annette is a Berlin-based singer-songwriter specializing in orchestral and decadent indie pop/rock, and her selection “Saint” is a baroque pop fever dream for the bitter and brokenhearted. Kiki tells DISCO: “‘Saint’ is an anthem for eldest daughters who’d rather set fire to their grief than cry through it. The cinematic swell of strings and pulsing percussion invite you to a ball you don’t want to leave, even though the clock is about to strike midnight and you're drowning in red wine and the silence of the night is closing in.”
Lo Barnes - “Let The Devil Ride”
British singer-songwriter Lo Barnes creates ‘60s-inspired rock ballads that boast a heavy undercurrent of heartbreak and haunting. She tells DISCO how her Fresh Spins selection, “Let The Devil Ride,” was recorded with friends from the band The Heavy. “I was their backing singer for almost 10 years,” she says. “When I wrote it, I drove over to their guitarist Dan’s house to play it for him, as I had a feeling he would love it. Writing this song really helped me tap into my undernurtured rebellious side while finding levity in a cheeky and mischievous lyrical world.”
Chlxoe - “Last Thing”
Los Angeles pop performer Chlxoe tells DISCO how her remix-ready electronic song “Last Thing” first came to life in fall 2022 on a late night in a University of Southern California practice space.
“My songwriting process is based mainly on fictional scenarios with undertones of very real emotions,” Chlxoe continues. “I find most of my inspiration through film, books, or just observing everyday life — and, of course, the occasional informal and unlicensed therapy session with a friend. ‘Last Thing’ was written in a stream-of-consciousness way; I created the piano progression, and the story just flowed out of me. The song follows the inner dialogue of a person who allowed themself to get too attached to the idea of what something (or someone) could’ve been, and is dealing with that one-sided heartbreak while seeing how unaffected the other person is.
Lewis Knaggs - “Liar Liar”
British singer, songwriter, musician, and filmmaker Lewis Knaggs fuses genres like indie rock, Americana, and grunge while layering in diaristic lyrics. On his Fresh Spins selection “Liar Liar,” Lewis tells DISCO how the song is “an exploration of inner dialogue, self-deception, and the tensions between our internal truths and external personas.”
He adds: “Rooted in reflections on personal connections and broader social dynamics, the track examines the quiet lies we carry in our headspace and the far-reaching impact they can have when left unresolved. It’s a song about the fragile nature of truth, from the intimate scale of relationships to the sweeping consequences of miscommunication on a global stage.”
Natan AK - “Denim”
Montreal-based lo-fi rocker Natan AK tells his fuzzy and atmospheric Fresh Spins submission “Denim” is about “the bittersweetness of coming of age in the city, underscored by the buried feelings of losing friends to suicide as a young adult.”
Natan adds: “I really tried to sonically channel melancholy and nostalgia with the arrangement and shoegaze influence to create a kind of ‘90s-inspired anthem. Recording this track was a lot of fun, and it was spread out over three different studios. I am super fortunate to have had a number of my friends play various parts and sing backup vocals to get the final product.”
