How DISCO Gives Rapper Mighty More Time To “Get Back To Creation”
Mighty (aka Mathias Mauk) is a rapper, singer-songwriter, and community advocate based in Portland. His story is particularly inspirational; as a child, Mighty grew up impoverished, bouncing around between homes as his father was incarcerated and his mother was dealing with addiction. When he wasn’t crashing with friends, Mighty spent 10 years living out of his mother’s Buick.
Today, the rapper pours his experiences into music and has launched Laced Up PDX, a nonprofit that works to provide kids with “kicks, school supplies, and confidence.” He has also landed sync deals with Netflix, HBO, Gatorade, MTV, and more recognizable brands.
Mighty sat down with DISCO to talk about his career beginnings, using DISCO as a resource for sync opportunities, and how much simpler it is to trade ideas with collaborators also on DISCO in the studio. “A lot of the producers that I work with love using DISCO,” Mighty says. “Just yesterday I did two songs with someone from LA and they use DISCO as well, and it was so seamless. The collaboration only took 24 hours. DISCO offered us that kind of bridge. It’s useful not only for top liners, but for producers alike.”
Storing deliverables in one secure location
Mighty initially started using DISCO as a way to help land sync opportunities. He says DISCO’s personalized Artist Pages has been vital for storing all of his tracks, stems, and lyric sheets, among other assets. If everything is stored on one professional, user-friendly page, he can quickly send one link over to potential clients.
“DISCO can deliver everything through a one-stop shop,” Mighty says. “That’s the difference between landing a spot or not. In that space, deliverables are key. So being able to diversify the deliverable for whatever company we’re working with — from metadata to lyric sheets to stems, to different track versions — it’s super-duper important to find a tool that will let you do that.”
“I utilized DISCO to expedite the process and landed two spots with NFL Films”
Mighty adds that landing a sync opportunity can often come down to how easy you make it for clients to click through your available tracks. “I wanted to execute at a high level, and DISCO was the tool that helped me do that,” Mighty says.
The rapper also talks about how storing his work on DISCO led to a huge opportunity to place two sync spots with NFL Films. “I was going back and forth with [creative agency] Formation Sounds’ founder Farnell Newton about getting an opportunity, and I utilized DISCO to expedite the process,” he says. “I landed two spots with them that morning… I want to make it convenient for anyone who’s dealing with me as an artist, and DISCO helps us do that.”
Because Mighty’s sounds have played well in the sports arena, he has created a “High Energy” DISCO Playlist especially for any potential client looking for sounds specific to the athletic space. “They can collapse the High Energy Playlist and be able to see the vibes they’re looking for.”
Get more sync opportunities by adding track metadata
In addition to providing specific metadata within tracks, like track name, artist, contact info, lyrics, and album art, Mighty saves time by using DISCO’s AI Auto-Tagging feature, which analyzes your music and applies descriptive, searchable track tags.
“Sometimes I need to upload certain top line vocals, wet or dry,” Mighty says. “So that’s big, being able to tag them the right way. I usually use DISCO’s Auto-Tagging, which is great. Making sure everything with the metadata is effective, like uploading lyric sheets, is huge with sync. If you don’t have that, you usually lose the spot.”
DISCO saves artists time with AI-assisted Lyric Transcription
As a rapper, lyrics are a vital component to track creation. To that end, Mighty gets a lot of use out of DISCO’s Lyric Transcription, which populates lyrics in the metadata of tracks and makes it easier to search by key words contained in the lyrics of songs, which can improve discoverability.
“As an artist, the hardest thing to do is to make sure you’re keeping your lyrics where they’re supposed to be, because ideas will hit you upside the head while you’re recording, and you end up changing the direction you’re going,” Mighty says. “And so why not utilize a tool like an AI-transcribed lyric sheet? I mean, come on, it’s saving time.”
“I have much more time now to get back to the ideas, back to the creation”
DISCO’s easy-to-use platform gives artists the freedom to do what they do best — create. “There are so many great artists in the world, but they just don’t get things to the finish line,” Mighty says. “Like they say, some of the best ideas are laying somewhere in your hard drive, because they just were never executed. A tool like DISCO allows you to alleviate that. That is key as an artist. I have much more time now to get back to the ideas, back to the creation, back to being who I’m supposed to be. Not a lot of platforms offer such a user-friendly dashboard.”
