Nettwerk Music Group is a leading global independent record label headquartered in Vancouver. With more than 200 employees across the world, Nettwerk also has offices in London, Los Angeles, Toronto, Sydney, Berlin, Amsterdam, and more.
Ruth Wyatt, Nettwerk’s UK & Europe Director Of Sync, spoke with DISCO in London about how the label started using DISCO, how Similarity Search helps guide directors through Nettwerk’s catalog within a budget, and much more. “DISCO is always open all the time,” Ruth says.
“It was noticeable how easy DISCO was”
“One day I went to the office and there was this new idea [that] we try this thing called DISCO,” Ruth remembers of getting started on the platform. “Everyone’s nervous of change, [but] it was noticeable how easy it was to ingest music, organize it, get all the metadata you want in there, including lyrics. Then the rest is history, really.”
Finding the right sync with Similarity Search
Ruth explains that most of the time, music supervisors have an idea of what song the director wants, but they’re working within budget constraints. “As rights holders, we’re here to help guide [supervisors] through our catalogs,” Ruth explains. “The reason they’re briefing out to you is because this song doesn’t quite work.”
By plugging in a YouTube link to Similarity Search, DISCO sources alternate choices that do clear the budget. “The Similarity Search is awesome because that search engine helped pull at least 20 songs from all of [our] music that could be good,” Ruth says. “And even if those songs aren’t quite right, that then sends you down a rabbit hole [of options].”
Unmatched security & watermark options
“What’s really great about DISCO is the security options that they have,” Ruth says about sending files to outside parties. “If you’re sending unreleased files out to a client, it’s really important that it’s going to be safe when it lands in the hands of the people that need it. Having the watermark options is really good because if anything goes wrong, it can be traced.”
Ruth also likes that there’s the option to send streaming-only files and playlists, adding another layer of security. “In the sync world — for music supervisors and for myself — if we’re dealing with trailer clips or scene clips, you can password protect them as well.”
Getting more done in less time
Ultimately, Ruth appreciates how DISCO saves time because of the platform’s uniquely centralized framework. “It saves so much time using DISCO because everything’s in one place… It allows me to whip through way more briefs in a day.”
